Baker was one of the BBC's main Radiophonic Workshop composers. The Workshop was a division dedicated to using tape manipulation (there weren't any synthesizers yet) to make friendly, bite-sized news bumpers & program backgrounds which radio DJs could talk over. Lonely faux-oboes, zippy electronic beats, slowed down & sped up bells, twee detective tv show themes. I think it's all got a very comfy lull-you-to-sleep vibe that's perfect for having somebody whisper in your ear about life's everyday business. Tracklisting: Newstime BBC, Tros Y Gareg, Tros Y Gareg, 20th Century Focus, Vendetta: The Ice Cream Man, Woman's Hour, Many a Slip, Look and Read, Building the Bomb, Au Printemps, Big Ben News Theme, Codename, Decimal Currency, Barnacle Bill, Dial M for Murder, Farm Management, Radio Sheffield, French Science and Technology, Good Morning Wales, Heavy Plant Crossing, COI Technology Pavillion, John Baker Interview, Radio Nottingham Idents, Look North: Newstime, Man Alive UFO, PM Computers in Business, Submarines, Oranges and Lemons, Orbit, Places for People, Sling Your Hook, Sulvez La Piste, Scene Never Never, Diary of a Madman, The Two O'Clock Spot, Radio London: News Idents, The Caves of Steel, The Locusts, Square Two, The Tape Recorder, Tom Tom, Tom Tom, Trial, Trial, Vendetta: The Sugar Man, Spin Off, Radiophonic FX C, Radiophonic FX A, Radiophonic FX B.
