With many African countries gaining independence from France & the UK, European music was considered passe and in some places even taboo. At the same time, because of the legacy of European rule, horns and guitars were incredibly popular & relatively easy to find. Add a worldwide explosion of interest in Latin/Carribean music (think of your grandmother listening to Prez Prado on her hi-fi), and suddenly African music is filled with exuberant rhumbas, boleros, calypsos & more. The combination of hard pulsing, minor key horn riffs leapfrogged by lilting picked guitar lines spread fast across the continent, and the polyrythm remains explosive for both sweaty dance floors & cool nodding heads. Might be the best thing on Honest Jons yet. Tracklisting: Orchestre OK Jazz-A Moins Que Namikosa, Gnonnas Pedro-Adigbedoto, Le Grand Kalle/Don Gonzalo/Manu Dibango-Africa Boogaloo, Orchestre Yaya Mas-Rampa Rampa, Charles Lembe-Quiero Wapacha, Orchestre OK Jazz-Ven Y Ven Y Ven, Rio Band-Vamos A Bailar, Laba Sosseh-Guantanamo, Orchestre Baobab-On Verra Ca, Orchestre N'Guewel-Mi Guajeo, Amara Toure-N'Niyo, Orchestre OK Jazz-Micorrason, Pierre Tehana & Orchestre Poly Rythmo-Il N'est Jamais Trop Tard.
