'Champeta' is the name of a knife, a social class and a musical style, all surrounding Palenque, a town founded in the 1600s by escaped slaves outside Cartagena Colombia. Throughout the 1970s, sound systems set up for block parties played records brought directly from Nigeria, Ghana & more places in Africa. And just like Northern Soul DJs, someone who found a hot number usually ripped off the record label to ensure nobody else could get their hands on an exclusive hit. Fela songs & highlife styles suddenly got new names, and very quickly there were bands formed who wanted to play the sounds they heard. Stunning afrocuban rhythms pound hard over fried-to-shit guitars, and then there's tracks like Abelardo Carbono's 'La Negra Kulengue' which throws in a Donald Duck impression. Tracklisting: Manuel Alvarez y Sus Dangers-Esclavo Moderno, Cassimbas Negras-Bumburumbumbum, Abelardo Carbobo y su Conjunto-Palenque, Son Palenque-Tungalala, Cumbia Siglo XX-Naga Pedale, Wganda Kenya-Pim Pom, Banda Los Hijos de la Nina Luz-Dejala Corre, Pedro Beltran-Payalo Ahi, Cumbia Moderna de Soledad-Tetero, Abelardo Carbono y su Conjunto-Quiero a Mi Gente, Lisandro Meza y su Conjunto-Shacalao, Son Palenque-Palengue Palengue, Abelardo Carbono y su Conjunto-La Negra Kulengue, La Tromba-Calaba Calabao, Los Soneros de Gamero-Katunga, Rabel Y su Grupo-Manaye, La Nelda Pina-El Sucusu, Wganda Kenya-El Lobo, Son Palenque-Dame Un Trago, Grupo Palma Africana-La Botellita, Wganda Kenya-Yoro, Cumbia Siglo XX-Los Esquelitos, Los Aguilas Rojas-Yeye Yeye.
