Brilliant insect movie soundtrack that has doom & gloom synthesizers burrowing slowly, sweetly, inevitably into the center of your head. Desmond Briscoe was the other guy who founded the BBC Radiophonic Workshop along with Daphne Oram. David Vorhaus was a classical bass player, originally from the US, who formed the band White Noise with a couple of other BBC stalwarts (Delia Derbyshire & Brian Hodgson). Both boys earn their reputation here too, delivering 45 minutes of modular squeee, burbles, wind sfx, clicking things, and dot matrix printer noises. Occasional use of orchestral counterpoint a la late Beethoven to give the nasty bugs weighty impact. Movie was the lone full length directed by Saul Bass, who made his name putting together the clever title sequences for Otto Preminger, Hitchcock, & Kubrick.
