Robert Wyatt's reflexive, quizzical lyrics, harmonic suspension, & tweedly falsetto are all over this 1st Soft Machine lp. There are some proto-prog instrumental sections too, but you can mostly hear their roots at the UFO club (alongside Pink Floyd), & on the Riviera (playing psych for jewel-bedecked hipsters). There's even a total fuzz stomper- one of their best songs- the menacing 'Why Are We Sleeping?' But as Ratledge pushed further & further, the band would instead get jazzier & proggier, until Wyatt got kicked out in '72. Tracklisting: Hope for Happiness, Joy of a Toy, Hope For Happiness, Why Am I So Short, So Boot If At All, A Certain Kind, Save Yourself, Priscilla, Lullabye Letter, We Did It Again, Plus Belle Qu'une Poubelle, Why Are We Sleeping, Box 25/4 Lid.
