Ardoin's wheezing duets with fiddler Dennis McGee are the starting point for all things cajun/zydeco. Ardoin has a high tenor voice that ripples like a flag & hiccoughs on cue for punctuation. His vocal melodies are often remarkably similar to country blues tunes, but here they're wedded to a button accordion huffing away in the wrong key underneath. It's said that the style was developed for fiddles first and added accordions later. But without drums (which didn't travel well back when the Louisana swamps were being settled), players had to saw heavily to provide enough rhythm for house party dancing. The problem was tackled anew in the mid-1950s when zydeco king Clifton Chenier added a washboard to the traditional duet. Ardoin's entire output of 78s.
