Norman Whitfield/Barrett Strong's cocksure & savvy album which drug the Temps into the late 60s kicking & screaming. After the departure of David Ruffin, the band was busy with infighting and Paul Williams' illness (he traveled with oxygen tanks & sometimes sang sitting down from behind a curtain). Inspired by Sly Stone, Whitfield inserted long throbby guitar breaks, lyrics about taking drags & expanding your mind, & tossed the vocal lines from member to member like a game of badmitton. It was a long way from guys in green bow ties doing choreographed spins. The most inflammatory track on the album 'War', was deemed too much for the fans, & so was pawned off on Edwin Starr. But Whitfield was right once again & the song became Starr's biggest hit. Tracklisting: Psychedelic Shack, You Make Your Own Heaven and Hell Right Here on Earth, Hum Along and Dance, Take a Stroll Thru Your Mind, It's Summer, War, You Need Love Like I Do, Friendship Train.
