The field of clinical psychology exploded during the 1950s. National standards and journals began to exist, it became possible to get a doctoral degree as programs cropped up at universities, and the number of practicing clinicians rose exponentially. It was basically the facebook of 1955. A slew of ideas & jargon suddenly began to seep into the popular consciousness, many of which are still around. Just think of how oddly specific it is to call an 8 year old 'well-adjusted', for example, and yet it's pretty everyday conversation. Anyhow, a sudden crop of cartoons, advertisements, sitcom plots and one-liners got the word out, but only one guy, an A&R man named Bud Freeman, decided to make a whole concept album about it. To sing the tunes, he employed Lee, a singer who'd had a small part on an NBC radio serial & had to be fired when she ended up with more fan mail with the show's star. Arranger Bob Thompson had also backed up Criswell and Mae West. Plus, Shelley Manne, Andre Previn & several other California studio musicians provided close-fitting & subtle peformances. Best of all, Lee's time as a Jungian psych patient meant that she didn't treat the material as broadly as she might've, leading the way for many years of rediscovery by irony-armored listeners of the 70s & well beyond. Both her psychology-themed albums, plus Burl Ives-type folk songs she released as singles around the same time. Tracklisting: Shrinker Man, The Will to Fail, The Guilty Rag, Stay As Sick As You Are, Hush Little Sibling, Real Sick Sounds, Repressed Hostility Blues, I Can't Get Adjusted to the You Who Got Adjusted to Me, Schizophrenic Moon, Properly Loved, Gunslinger, It Must Be Something Psychological, Life Is Just a Bed of Neuroses, Case History, Why Johnny Why, Love That Man, Mental blocks, Be Miserable, The Gallad for Group Therapy, We Must Adjust, The Insecure Tango, Don'tville, When I Was a Little Girl, The Get Well March, My Mother Chose My Husband, Little Willie Found Some Dynamite, Poor Miss Bailey, Little Willie and the Cat, The House of the Rising Sun, Blow the Candles Out, Lotsa Money, Little Willie in the Well, The Frozen Logger, Little Willie's Sister Ruth, Woman Go Home.
