Aka Sory, the director of Mali's most precious musical diamond, the Orchestra Mopti/Kanaga. This is a band that, when they wish to, has minimal, repetetive, insanely funked up vamps that can cripple all comers. It's especially evocative whenever they have a song for Sekou Amadou (the founder of Mopti the city), and on this record there's one that they played in front of Mali's president at the first national battle of the bands also known as the biennale, 1970. It's a tad ghoulish to watch Thrill Jockey stepping into 70s African reissue records, but hey, at least they're starting at the top. Tracklisting: Yayoroba, Boro, Gambari, Astan Kelly, Sekou Amadou, Sayouwe, Porry, Aisse, Bayadjourou, Sare Mabo.
