The lines between Greece, Turkey, Armenia, Syria, Bulgaria & Russia were being redrawn again & again during the teens & 20s, usually with the blood of the countless unlucky used as ink. There were many moments small & large where anybody who could got out fast. And lots of people landed where there was supposed to be money: Manhattan. Most who arrived in the US were left with worlds inside their heads which they could no longer see, and in most cases, no longer even existed. So smoldering memories of all sorts quickly got enunciated straight into shellac. There are cathartic rockers, winding melodies which eventually became part of pop's musical backbone ('Miserlou'), and laments thick with homesickness, mockery or both at once. 2 discs of immigrant Americans, and a 3rd of US issued (or even bootlegged) songs that were recorded overseas & explicitly meant to be cherished here as solace. Flat out incredible notes by Ian Nagoski ('Black Mirror', 'String of Pearls', 'Brass Pins & Match Heads') that make the messy histories understandable & tell of unrepentant drug users, couples clinging to one another in hard times, rebellious mountain outlaws, and maybe best of all- wide-eyed teenagers landing at Ellis island who ended up retiring to Florida in the 1970s, having both become & made the REAL new America.
