Like Stud Cole (or maybe even Sean Bonniwell), Carter was a total anachronism, a 50s rockabilly/Elvis guy figuring out how to adapt his hiccoughing skills to the fuzzy garage fads of the mid-60s. Except Carter was not knee deep amidst California hustlers trying to make it big, but instead spent most of his time recording in a home studio in Danville, IL. Which, to my mind anyhow, hints that Carter knew exactly what he was up to. Impressive, rich production and zebra-stripe arrangements that pit burly electric guitar against crazed playing of echoed-out dobro and clarinet toots. Rocks like a motherfucker too.
