A before, during & after history of the serpentine afro-funk band Sahel, which began a wave of Cuban-inflected music that took over Dakar & was eventually called mbalax. Singer Idrissa Diop (whose debut lp makes African music collectors instantly form beads of sweat on their foreheads) started singing at age 16 & eventually moved to France in the 80s on the coattail of Youssou N'Dour. He still performs today. Cheikh Tidiane Tall, the other pillar of the band, was known for playing guitar and organ at the same time. Taken from reel to reel tapes (and if you think African lps tend to be in bad condition...), so there's a few unreleased tracks. Tracklisting: Dioubo, Tioro Baye Thierno, Yaye Boye, Cintorita, Con el Sahel, Bamba, Caridad, Daele, Massani Cissa, Fonkale Garape, Diamonoye Teye, Gueth.
